Multisensory learning
is using teaching materials to access learning through 2 or more of our senses. This is useful for students with learning
disabilities (like dyslexia), visual oand/or hearing challenges. It includes teaching information through
visual, auditory, tactile and/or kinesthetic means. The multi-process education approach helps students
access information and skills through more than one modality. Helping with comprehension, reinforcement and
practice.
One software program is Earobics. Students interact with characters like Hakeem
Hippo to help them develop foundational literacy skills. It can help with rhyming, blending sounds,
phonetics and developing basic literacy skills. There seem to be many programs out there but most appear to be geared for a younger group. I am not sure yet what is out there for the high school student but further exploration is warranted.
